Van Gogh Starry Night An Oil Filled With Passion And Bold Colors

Vincent van Gogh was a tortured soul who had little faith in his talent and sold only one painting in his lifetime. At the age of 37 he died of a gunshot wound possibly self-inflicted. He never lived to know the affect his paintings like the Van Gogh starry night would have on future generations. Today he is acknowledged as one of the greatest of his time and his artworks demand huge prices when they appear in auction houses.

His first paintings were dark heavy and somber. His greatest masterpieces were all painted within a short span of time prior to his death. These paintings were bursts of color, rich vibrancy and strong brushstrokes.

He falls within the ambit of post impressionists from the Netherlands and his raw intensity and use of color and heavy brushstrokes has inspired many later artists well into the 20th century. As a child he sketched but it was only in his twenties that he started painting seriously. From then over the ensuing years up to his death he managed to produce a wealth of artworks totaling more than 2100. These included almost 900 oils and 1300 prints, sketches using various materials and watercolors. His work covered the full spectrum from still life to landscapes and self portraits.

Starry Night depicts the landscape as seen from his window in the sanitarium. One can only image him gazing at this scene at night and painting from memory the next day. This painting is considered by many as his best work and is one that is reproduced in many forms throughout the world.

Amongst his most famous and well known works people always include his Sunflowers series which is a range of paintings of these flowers in various forms in and out of a vase. Many of these paintings are to be seen in art museums around the globe. His still life Irises, The Potato Eaters and The Red Vineyard which hangs in Moscow's Pushkin Museum are also well known paintings.

Of his delightful Night Cafe painting which is displayed in the Yale University's Gallery of Art in the United States he is said to have express the thoughts that in this particular painting he wished to show that even in a cafe a person could lose their mind and reputation and even go so far as to commit a criminal act. During his productive phase he painted numerous self portraits that were excellent examples of his style and art.

In the list of top 10 highest prices ever paid for paintings his name appears twice. In fifth place for his Portrait of Dr Gachet bought by a businessman from Japan and at number nine his Self Portrait without a Beard. The self portrait he painted in 1889 and when sold in 1998 it set its own record.

Vincent van Gogh once said "To do good work one must eat well, be well housed, have one's fling from time to time, smoke one's pipe, and drink one's coffee in peace." He proved that through adversity, spells of madness and self-doubt one can create paintings like Van Gogh starry night filled with beauty that will inspire people into infinity and beyond.
