Different Types of Infected Finger Infections

There are a variety of reasons that cause people to suffer from an infected finger. It is just a skin infection but it primarily affects the fingers of the person. Blisters, redness, lesions, and swelling are the visible signs that will confirm an infected finger. The most common reason for an infected finger is a bacterial infection. Listed below are some of the different types of finger infections.

Paronychia:

This may be one of the most common finger or nail infections in the world. It is caused by bacteria entering through the skin and it develops along the sides of the nails. It is very common to find that the reason for this infection is that the person has a habit of nail biting or finger sucking.

Household cleaners and dish washing liquids are known to increase the chance of contracting this infection as they are among the detergents that have a tendency to stay on the skin. A person suffering from Paronychia will generally notice their finger swollen and there will be a pus like formation. It is also a very painful finger infection and it can disfigure the digit.

Felon:

This finger infection is another of the common ones. It generally makes its appearance on the fingertip, but it can also occur on the finger pad and any other delicate area of the finger. Results published from research show that although Felon may start as a mild finger infection, it is actually a serious condition and requires immediate medical treatment and medication. Failure to get the finger treated may cause permanent damage to the finger tip. Some symptoms to look for with Felon are swelling, redness and pain in the area that is infected, and there will likely be a fever.

Herpetic Whitlow:

This is one of the most painful finger infections that you can contract. Unlike other finger infections, this one is caused by the Herpes Simple Virus 1 and 2. In the infected stage there will be swelling, pain, and blisters that become full of clear liquid. Children who suck their thumbs are susceptible to contracting this infection.

It is also a very common infection among health care workers. They regularly contract the infection due to coming in to direct contact with the oral secretions of those under their care. Another symptom of Herpetic Whitlow is fever and it is not uncommon for the lymph nodes to become enlarged.

Cellulite:

This is another bacterial finger infection which is very painful. The bacterium enters through any torn or broken areas of the skin on the finger. It causes inflammation by spreading under the skin. It is an infection that can commonly be found in people suffering from diabetes and other types of health problems caused by trauma.

For many years doctors have claimed the major cause of the infection is caused by the lack of personal hygiene. Suffering from an infected finger is a painful experience but it may have been prevented with better personal hygiene practices.
