An Overview Of The Life Cycle Of Cicada Killer Wasps

Cicada killer wasps primarily live in all states to the right of the Rocky Mountains. These insects are generally bigger versus comparable bugs. These wasps primarily excavate holes in residential backyards.

Cicada killer wasps customarily nourish themselves on the blossom's secretions, whereas the semi-developed or larval phase devours cicada that is gathered with the help of fully matured cicada killer wasps. Cicada killer wasps are inclined create their shelters in gritty, uncovered and dry earth in plain sight of expansive, hot sunlight.

Cicada killer wasps are extremely menacing if badgered. Reproducing males are teeming with anger and are quickly bothered. When one disturbs them, they retaliate with an agonizing needle. Cicada killer wasps' tunnels are protected by a dune of granulated earth. The insects single out nests in locations with little growth and rarely even settle on patches with extensive growth.

Cicada killer wasps in winters turn as larvae in the soil. In spring, pupation occurs and by mid June to early July they emerge as adults, whereas emergence occurs throughout the summer time. The female Cicada killer wasps are in charge of feeding, mating and digging burrows for several weeks before preying on cicadas. The excess soil that is thrown out to make burrows forms a regular U-shaped mound at the entrance of the burrow.

The female wasps search for tree turns and lower limbs in search of cicadas. Cicada killer wasps have a unique way of catching its prey compared to other insects. It first stings its prey, turns the victim on its back, straddles it and then drags it to the burrow to feed on it.

Every unit of the wasp is fulfilled with one to 3 cicadas and a single seed prior to final enclosing. Once two to three days have passed, the embryo opens. The larva nourishes itself on the cicadas from anywhere between four to 10 days, depending on when only the exterior layer is left. When it is harvest season, the larva creates a silk protective barrier around itself, becomes smaller and hunkers down for winter. There is only reproductive cycle every calendar year for Cicada killer wasps.

You can eradicate cicada killer wasp's colonies by adapting cultural practices. Using adequate lime and fertilizer applications can prevent establishment of cicada killer wasp's colonies.

Frequent watering can promote thick growth of turf, this helps in eliminating cicada killer wasp infestation in one or two seasons. If the infestation is severe chemical control becomes necessary to prevent danger from stinging cicada killer wasps.
