Scoliosis Treatment

The human spine is made to be able to move and help our bodies rotate. There are natural curves in the spine that are necessary. However, there is a condition, scoliosis, where the curvatures of the spine are abnormal and can cause deformities.

Scoliosis is generally seen in children as the spinal bones are growing fast and may not have the correct alignment. A child will scoliosis that is left untreated can develop serious problems and damage to the heart, lungs, neck and pelvic areas.

We will now discuss some signs that can help people, especially parents of young children, to spot any signs of scoliosis of the spine:

Sticking out of either hip

The head is not centered directly from above the pelvis

People with scoliosis will lean towards a specific side

Protrusion of the hip

One shoulder blade sticking out or higher than the other shoulder blade

Ribs are not equal heights

Irregular rib heights

A bulge on one side of the chest may be noticeable in babies with scoliosis

Measuring the leg lengths can give you an idea too, different leg lengths can be a sign of scoliosis

How to treat scoliosis

Although there is no cure for the condition, there are some excellent treatments available that can either prevent the condition from worsening or try to correct the damage.

1. Braces:

Spine braces are very helpful and are always the first form of treatment for children who are showing signs of scoliosis developing.

With a brace, the success depends on how often the brace is worn. Most spine specialists will advise children with scoliosis to wear the brace all the time, day and night. The brace will be worn until the bones stop growing. The doctor involved will check the child's growth patterns and monitor their height. Once the bones have stopped growing, the brace does not have to be worn anymore.

There are two different types of spine braces that can be used to combat scoliosis. The under arm brace is the most common type of spine brace used. It is molded to fit the body and is not very uncomfortable.

The 2nd type of spine brace is the Milwaukee brace. A full-torso brace that contains flat bars across the chest and back to support the spine shape.

2. Surgery for Scoliosis:

In the most severe cases of scoliosis, surgery may be required. This usually is in the form of spinal fusion surgery, where artificial bone is inserted between the vertebrae to help stability. The bones then fuse together, limiting movement but also preventing further damage to the spine.
